SIVU
SIVU
For Sivu, Fiona Alice wanted to blend a rugged forest-like texture with a contrasting geometric pattern. Finland is known for its natural beauty but also for fashion companies such as Marimekko. Marimekko’s precise mathematical prints often represent equality, a strong symbol of Finnish values. The print Fiona drew inspiration from is Maija Isola’s Tiiliskivi, which translates to “brick”. Fiona then paired this with the Rosette Stitch across the shoulders, feeling this texture mimicked ice crystals when frost is forming.
Sivu was originally published in amirisu’s Issue 26, Spring/Summer 2023.

Note
The body of this sweater is worked in pieces from the bottom up. The shoulders are shaped with Short Rows before they are seamed together using the Three-Needle Bind-Off method. The sleeves are also worked flat and then attached to the body. The collar is pick up and worked in the round. The sides are finished with mattress stitch, leaving a small split in either side at the hem.
2x2 Ribbing is featured on the hems, cuffs and collar. The body is made up of a two colors to create a rectangle pattern. The vertical lines are slipped every second row while the horizontal lines are one row of knitting. There is no need to carry the second color in behind the work. Individual pieces of yarn are used for each line. This creates a fabric that is not too bulky. The texture on the shoulders is Rosette Stitch.
